VijazZ Festival — Pocallum

VijazZ arrives and Vilafranca del Penedès transforms. Some of our most treasured images were born here — in impossible lighting conditions, a few metres from the musicians.

VijazZ is the festival Vilafranca del Penedès deserves: honest, close-up, with the best musicians anyone could bring to the territory without anyone expecting it. The European and American jazz scene shows up in small format, face to face with the audience, no barriers.

Joe Lovano, Makaya McCraven, Marcin Wasilewski, Avishai Cohen, Robben Ford, Fresh Sound New Talent — names that fill billings in Oslo or New York, playing in rooms where you can hear them breathe.

We have been going for years, sometimes as spectators. The problem is that VijazZ clashes with the Festival de Blues de Barcelona, and we often have to choose. In 2025 we got our press accreditation and could cover the programme properly: room by room, concert by concert, three intense days. Many chronicles and photo-reportages on the blog.

Document without getting in the way. Enter and leave without anyone noticing we were there, but so that everyone can remember what happened.

The technical challenge is real: concert lighting in small spaces, often with no room to move, with musicians who improvise and rarely repeat the same gesture. No second chances.

What we gain in return is irreplaceable: proximity. The sweat that flies, the concentration in the eyes, the conversation between musicians that never appears in the programme.
